What makes a building green?

A building that is considered “green” has qualities that contribute to a healthy environment through energy efficiency, reducing toxic materials in interiors, water efficiency, reduced material use and other similar qualities.  Some of these initiatives are their own reward, through short term (payback for energy efficient measures), while others are improve occupant health or are simply a sign that an organisation is committed to environmental stewardship.

Currently, the most recognized verification system is the LEED system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).  The current version of the energy act will require, if passed, that all new provincial buildings are designed to a LEED Silver rating.  We have included for LEED design in our costing.

When do I need an architect?

“Architects are trained to help you realize your objectives and guide you through the design and construction process. In particular, architects will help you through the complex regulatory building process including zoning bylaws, building codes, and contractors’ bids.” Via the Ontario Association of Architects.

What value does an architect bring?

“Education, training, and professional experience enable the architect to transform your ideas into design solutions that meet function needs. The architect – who serves as advisor, coordinator, and technical manager, as well as creative artist – can design and administer a contract resulting in a project that is completed on schedule, within budget, and to a high standard of quality.  Via the Ontario Association of Architects.

What is the difference between a designer and an architect?

“Architects are trained to help you realize your objectives and guide you through the design and construction process. In particular, architects will help you through the complex regulatory building process including zoning bylaws, building codes, and contractors’ bids” via the Ontario Association of Architects.

What is the relationship between a contractor and an architect?

Architects work closely with contractors to ensure that the building is built as drawn and instructed. Close collaboration between the architect and the contractor results in projects which are built on budget and on time.

What are the benefits of sustainable design?

First and foremost, it is more efficient: sustainable design has the capacity to do more with less, allowing for new opportunities. Secondly, the long term cost of a wasteful building both in pollution and dollars will be far greater then a sustainable building. Thirdly, it creates a more comfortable, pleasant and healthful experience for the eventual users.

What is LEED?

LEED™ is a system for designing, constructing, operating and certifying the green buildings. Developed by the United States Green Building Council in 1995 and by the Canadian Green Building Council in 2004 that provides a set of strategies intended to minimize the negative impact of buildings on the environment.

What is passive design?

Passive design is a building approach that reduces reliance on mechanical systems for heating, cooling, and lighting.

This is achieved by harnessing naturally occurring phenomena, such as the power of the sun, direction of wind, and other climatic effects to maintain consistent indoor temperatures and comfort.

What is net-zero design?

Net-zero design is designing a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually.

How much money will a sustainable design save me?

The savings with vary from project to project, although using sustainable strategies can significantly reduce long-term costs. Please contact us for an initial and complimentary consultation
